More Than a Name

Some company names come from boardrooms. Others are picked because the domain name is available. Beacon54 is different. This one is family.

A Light From the Past

My grandmother was born and raised on the Oregon coast. Life took her to plenty of other places, but eventually her story brought her back to where it began. She loved the coast, especially its lighthouses. Those magnificent towers standing against the Pacific, weathering storms and guiding people through the darkness. When I think about those lighthouses, I think about her. And when it came time to name my software company, I wanted a piece of her to be part of whatever I built. That's where Beacon comes from.

But the 54? That's where my family history gets a little wild.

In 1853, my grandmother's grandfather, Andrew Glenn, left Pennsylvania with his two younger brothers and headed west. He was sixteen years old. SIXTEEN. While most kids today are worrying about getting their driver's license, Andrew was crossing a continent. They joined the Longmire-Biles wagon train, the first emigrant wagon train to successfully cross Naches Pass through Washington's Cascade Mountains. Thirty-six wagons navigating brutal mountain terrain, with slopes so steep they had to lower wagons using ropes made from cattle hides. No highways, no GPS, and nobody coming to rescue you when things went sideways.

In 1854, Andrew reached Oregon's Coos Bay area, establishing roots in the very region where his granddaughter would eventually be born. That year became the other half of my company's name, connecting his incredible journey to the grandmother who meant so much to me.

More than 170 years later, here I am, sitting behind a computer building software. Andrew couldn't possibly have imagined that one of his descendants would someday name a company partly in his honor. I'm not crossing mountain passes with an ox team or prospecting for gold in Alaska. My frontier is made of code, ideas, late nights, and the stubborn belief that I can build something worth putting my name on.

Beacon54 connects the grandmother I knew and loved with the remarkable man whose courage helped bring our family to Oregon. It's more than a company name. It's a reminder of where I came from and the people who made my story possible.

One gave me the beacon. The other gave me the 54.

Building What's Next

Great ideas don't belong in a box. Neither should the software that brings them to life.

Beacon54 is an independent software development company driven by innovation, creativity, and the pursuit of what's possible. We develop applications across technologies, platforms, and industries, following promising ideas wherever they lead.

From practical utilities to emerging technologies, every project presents an opportunity to solve a problem, explore a new approach, or create something entirely unexpected. We're not defined by a particular category of software, and we have no intention of being limited by one.

Our focus is on thoughtful development, purposeful design, and turning ambitious ideas into software people genuinely want to use.
